| Dear prospective study participant: Thank you for your interest in this study. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes. The title of the study is "Advice-Giving." The research is being conducted by Dr. Lenore Szuchman, a professor in the Department of Psychology at Barry University. We are trying to understand how people feel about advice from family members and family obligation. In this study you will be presented with information about a person with a problem. Based on what you read, we will ask you questions about advice that the person might receive and advice that you receive. We will also ask for your opinions about some aspects of family relations. Finally, we will ask you to fill out some demographic information about yourself. We anticipate that there will be 200 participants. This study involves no deception, and you may withdraw at any time without any adverse effect to you. In performing these different tasks there is no known mental or physical stress, risk, or invasion of privacy. The benefit to you is that you have the opportunity to find out more about how psychologists learn about how people behave. Also, your participation may help our understanding of family relationships. Participation in this study is voluntary. If you do not wish to participate in the study at this time for any reason, you may withdraw with no penalty to yourself. This study has been approved by Barry University's Institutional Review Board. The information collected in this survey is completely anonymous. However, you should be aware that the experiment is not being run from a “secure” http server, so there is always a small possibility that responses could be viewed by unauthorized third parties (e.g., computer hackers).
